Plywood Grades Explained: MR vs BWR vs BWP vs Marine

October 28, 2026

MR, BWR, BWP, marine, calibrated, E0, fire retardant. Buying plywood in India can feel like learning a new language at the counter, with every dealer using the words a little differently.

Here is the short answer. Plywood grades describe how much water a sheet is built to withstand. MR (commercial) plywood is for dry interiors, BWR for humidity and occasional splashes, BWP for repeated water contact, and marine plywood (IS 710) for the harshest wet conditions with the strictest rules on timber and construction. Beyond these, specialist grades cover fire, construction formwork and long spans, and emission classes tell you how healthy a sheet is to live with.

This guide brings all of them together in one place.

The Four Core Grades at a Glance

Grade

Full form

Indian Standard

Resin

Built for

Typical use

MR

Moisture Resistant

IS 303

Urea- or melamine-formaldehyde

Dry interiors, normal humidity

Wardrobes, beds, TV units, office furniture

BWR

Boiling Water Resistant

IS 303

Phenol-formaldehyde

Humidity and occasional splashes

Kitchen wall units, dry base units, utility storage

BWP

IS 710

Phenol-formaldehyde

Constant water exposure, the strictest construction rules

Wet zones, boats, exterior-facing work

Think of the four as a ladder. Each step up adds water resistance, timber quality, treatment and cost.

MR Grade (Commercial Plywood)

MR stands for Moisture Resistant. It is the grade most people mean when they say "commercial plywood", made to IS 303, the Indian Standard for general-purpose plywood.

MR plywood is bonded with a formaldehyde-based resin designed for dry conditions. Most makers use urea-formaldehyde; Archidply's MR plywood uses melamine formaldehyde. It handles normal indoor humidity well, but is not designed for splashes, leaks or standing water.

Where it belongs: bedroom wardrobes, beds, storage boxes, TV and display units, study tables, bookshelves, office furniture and wall panelling in dry rooms.

Where to avoid it: sink units, hob areas, bathrooms, balconies and anything against a damp wall.

BWR Grade

BWR stands for Boiling Water Resistant. It is also a general-purpose grade under IS 303, but it is bonded with phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin, which holds its bond far better than MR resins when it gets damp.

BWR passes a boiling-water test, though a less demanding one than BWP. In practice it is resistant, not proof. It handles steam, humidity and the occasional spill very well, but isn't designed to sit in water.

Where it belongs: kitchen wall units and tall units, base units away from the sink, utility and laundry storage, and wardrobes in humid coastal cities.

BWP Grade

BWP stands for Boiling Water Proof. It is built for repeated, direct contact with water, bonded with PF resin and treated against fungus, termites and borers. In Archidply's range, BWP plywood is made to IS 710, the marine standard.

Where it belongs: kitchen sink units, base units around the hob, bathroom vanities, dishwasher and RO housings, balconies and exterior-facing furniture.

Marine Grade

Marine plywood is made to IS 710, which sets the strictest requirements of the four grades. Beyond the PF resin and the boiling-water performance, marine plywood also demands dense hardwood timber and tighter limits on defects, overlaps and gaps in the core.

IS 710 requires a marine sheet to survive 72 hours of continuous immersion in boiling water without the layers separating.

Is BWP the same as marine?

The two terms are often used together, and the overlap is real. BWP describes how water-resistant the bond is. Marine describes a full standard, IS 710, that includes a boiling-water-proof bond plus stricter rules on timber and construction. When a sheet is stamped IS 710, as Archidply's Gold Marine and Platinum Prime are, it meets both descriptions.

How the Grades Are Tested

The names Boiling Water Resistant and Boiling Water Proof come from how these grades are tested. Samples cut from finished sheets are kept in boiling water for a set period, then checked for separation between layers and for how much strength the glue line has kept.

Boiling water is far harsher than anything a kitchen or bathroom will expose a sheet to. A sheet that holds together after hours of boiling will hold together for years under a dripping tap. MR plywood is not tested to a boiling-water standard at all, which is why it belongs in dry rooms.

Specialist Grades Beyond the Core Four

Grade

Indian Standard

What it does

Typical use

Fire-retardant plywood

IS 5509

Treated to resist ignition and slow the spread of flame

Hotels, hospitals, malls, offices, partitions, kitchens

Shuttering plywood

IS 4990

Built for repeated use as concrete formwork

Construction sites

Block board

IS 1659

Solid wood strip core between veneers; resists sagging

Long shelves, tall wardrobe shutters, doors

Veneered decorative plywood

IS 1328

Plywood faced with a decorative natural wood veneer

Feature walls, premium furniture

Fire-retardant plywood is tested to three measured requirements under IS 5509: flame penetration of not less than 15 minutes for every 6 mm of thickness, rate of burning of not less than 20 minutes to lose 30% of weight, and not less than 30 minutes before a second ignition.

Block board comes in MR and BWP versions too, so the grade logic still applies: MR block board for dry wardrobes and shelves, BWP block board for long spans in kitchens and other damp areas.

Calibrated vs Non-Calibrated Plywood

Calibration is not a grade, but it is worth understanding. Calibrated plywood is sanded to an exact, even thickness across the whole sheet.

•           Why it matters: Even thickness means shutters close flush, joints line up, laminates sit flat and modular hardware fits as designed.

•           Who needs it most: Modular kitchens and wardrobes, where precision matters at every joint.

•           How to check: Measure the thickness at all four corners and in the middle. A calibrated sheet will match closely.

Archidply's Gold Marine and Platinum Prime are calibrated, and its manufacturing uses calibration sanding machines across its plywood.

Emission Grades: E0, E1 and E2

Plywood is bonded with formaldehyde-based resins, and every sheet releases some formaldehyde into the air. Emission classes tell you how much.

Emission class

What it means

Best for

E0

Very low formaldehyde emission

Bedrooms, children's rooms, closed kitchens, hospitals

E1

Low emission

Most homes and offices

E2

Higher emission

Best avoided in closed living spaces

Emission class is independent of water grade. An MR sheet can be low-emission, and a BWP sheet can be high-emission, so check both. In 2008, Archidply introduced low-formaldehyde-emission plywood in India, and its premium marine grades are rated E-0.

How to Read the Grade on a Sheet

Every certified sheet should tell you its grade without you having to take the dealer's word for it.

1.         The grade: MR, BWR, BWP or marine.

2.         The Indian Standard: IS 303, IS 710, IS 5509, IS 4990 or IS 1659.

3.         The ISI mark and BIS licence number: the licence can be checked in the official BIS Care app.

4.         The emission class: E0 or E1.

5.         The brand, thickness and batch details.

If the grade on the invoice doesn't match the grade on the sheet, ask why before the sheet is cut.

Five Myths About Plywood Grades

•           "Waterproof is a grade." It isn't. It is a sales word. Ask for BWR, BWP or marine and the standard behind it.

•           "Higher grade is always better." A marine sheet in a dry bedroom adds cost, not performance.

•           "Commercial means low quality." MR is a grade designed for dry rooms. A well-made MR sheet is the right choice there.

•           "All BWP plywood is marine plywood." Only sheets made to IS 710 are marine plywood. Check the standard.

•           "Grade decides health." Water grade and emission class are separate. Check for E0 or E1 as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main grades of plywood in India? MR (Moisture Resistant), BWR (Boiling Water Resistant), BWP (Boiling Water Proof) and marine. Specialist grades include fire-retardant (IS 5509), shuttering (IS 4990) and block board (IS 1659).

Which plywood grade is best? The best grade is the one built for the space. MR for dry rooms, BWR for humid areas, and BWP or marine for wet zones like sinks and bathrooms.

What is the difference between MR, BWR and BWP plywood? MR uses resin designed for dry conditions. BWR and BWP both use phenol-formaldehyde resin, but BWP is built and tested for repeated water contact, while BWR handles humidity and occasional splashes.

Is BWP plywood the same as marine plywood? The terms overlap. BWP describes a boiling-water-proof bond. Marine plywood is made to IS 710, which adds stricter rules on timber and construction. Archidply's BWP plywood is made to IS 710.

Which grade is commercial plywood? Commercial plywood is the trade name for MR grade plywood, made to IS 303.

Which plywood grade is used for kitchen cabinets? BWP or marine for the sink and hob units, and BWR for wall units, tall units and dry base units.

What does calibrated plywood mean? It is plywood sanded to an exact, even thickness across the whole sheet, which helps shutters close flush and laminates sit flat.

What is E0 plywood? E0 is the lowest common formaldehyde emission class. It suits bedrooms, children's rooms and closed spaces.

How do I know the grade of a plywood sheet? Read the stamp: it should show the grade, the Indian Standard, the ISI mark and the BIS licence number. Ask for the same grade to be written on the invoice.
